Ethical diamonds and origin

Every diamond has a story. It’s worth asking about.

From the CTJ Jewellery team, led by founder Greg Ward

Rough and polished diamonds side by side on paper parcels

Knowing where a diamond comes from is part of buying well, whether it was mined or grown. Here is what the main safeguards cover, and what to ask.

Natural and lab-grown

Natural

Natural diamonds

Rough diamonds in the legitimate trade move between countries under the Kimberley Process, an international certification scheme in force since 2003 that aims to keep conflict diamonds out of the market. Dealers also use the System of Warranties on invoices.

Lab-grown

Lab-grown diamonds

No mining is involved, but growing a diamond takes a great deal of energy. The footprint depends on how the grower’s power is generated.

Questions worth asking any jeweller

  • Is this diamond natural or lab-grown, and does the grading report say so?
  • What is known about where it was mined or grown?
  • Who made the piece, and who stands behind it after purchase?

Questions

What is the Kimberley Process?

An international certification scheme, in force since 2003, that tracks rough diamonds between countries to keep conflict diamonds out of the legitimate trade.

Are lab-grown diamonds more ethical?

They avoid mining, but growing them takes a lot of energy. Neither is automatically more ethical, so it is worth asking about the specific diamond.

Can I find out where my diamond came from?

Sometimes. Ask us what is known about any specific diamond, and we’ll tell you what the grading report and supplier provide.
